In their Los Puentes que Nos Unen (The Bridges that Unite Us) unit, 5th grade students learned to appreciate the awe-inspiring engineering of bridges, while expanding their Spanish vocabulary.
The students explored how different materials, designs, and technologies have paved the way for these increasingly powerful structures.
The unit study culminated with a bridge-building competition where students used toothpicks and marshmallows to build weight-bearing structures. The class then put their designs to the test by stretching their “bridges” across open spaces.
