High School Students Attend “Talking Science” at The Rockefeller University

Earlier this month, a group of High School students attended Talking Science at The Rockefeller University.
This annual event, now in its 63rd year, is designed to engage students — through interactive lectures and demonstrations — in an area of current research being conducted at the university. Led by members of Rockefeller’s world-class faculty, Talking Science offers a unique educational experience to hundreds of high school students and their teachers from across the tri-state area.

This event featured a keynote talk by Dr. Sohail Tavazoie, a Rockefeller University physician-scientist who is a leader in the study of metastasis. In his talk, Dr. Tavazoie discussed the features of normal cells and how cancer cells differ, the cancer therapies that have developed throughout the history of the disease, and his lab’s work on understanding metastatic disease, which leads to death. He shared exciting research that identified a protein, ApoE, that is linked to metastasis, and the related potential that this understanding has in developing new treatments for cancer.
