This year-long course introduces two semester-length studies of musical history and criticism in Classical and Popular music.
The first semester looks at the music of Western civilization from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Students will become familiar with representative works of the Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Modern eras and identify their defining stylistic traits. Examining the concept of “Classical Music” from traditional and critical perspectives, students will use historical reference points and tools of aesthetic analysis to explore the social, political, and technological factors that affected the creation of music in society.
The second semester examines the history of popular music and current trends through musical, cultural, and critical analysis and discussion, including pop, hip hop, rock and global pop genres. Materials will be drawn from recordings, books, articles, liner notes, podcasts, various reporting formats, and music videos based on student interests and current events. As a culminating project, students will generate a researched and annotated playlist to draw connections among songs, artists, styles, geographies and topics.
