Endangered Animal Recycled Sculptures: Blending Art and Science to Raise Awareness
6th grade visual art and science classes are teaming up to help raise awareness of climate change!
In art, students are researching endangered and at-risk animals in New York, and if and how climate change has contributed to their endangerment. Students are working individually and in small groups to build sculptures of an endangered animal of their choosing made out of recycled and found materials. After these sculptures are complete, we will build an installation on the 11th and 12th floors to bring awareness to the effects that climate change has on our world. In science, the same students are studying the causes and consequences of climate change, and will design potential solutions for several New York City neighborhoods. They will summarize their work in a series of posters which will form part of the overall installation in conjunction with the students’ animal sculptures.
