Students in "Beyond Art History?" Engage with "Outsider Art"

Students in “Beyond Art History?” taught by Kevin Slick visited Christie’s to examine the “Outsider Art” show.
Led by Cara Zimmerman, Head of Outsider Art and Americana at Christie’s, students discussed the ways in which self-taught artists challenge and subvert conventional notions of art historical development and creative expression. Moreover, students considered the role of the art market and emerging narratives in shaping the meaning of art works, both canonical and noncanonical. Students will continue to raise these questions and engage other perspectives in their ongoing investigation with contemporary art and art history in class.
