This past week, the First Program celebrated Ally Week, to support the LGBTQ+ community.
In House 91, on Friday, October 1, students learned about the many different kinds of families we have here at Dalton, specifically the families with parents who identify as LGBTQ+. In addition, the class talked about the difference between an ally and a friend and explored the importance of allyship in general and specifically for LGBTQ+ people.
On Monday, students were greeted by members of the LGBTQ+ parent group, who offered "I am an Ally" stickers designed by Middle School students.
The children learn that their school is a place with people who have so many different identities and that those differences make us stronger. The teachers normalize defining language using visuals on the FP walls and feature LGBTQ+-identified characters in books, not only this week but throughout the school year.
